The Academic Certificate (AC) in Communication Skills for Non-Native English Speakers is an interdisciplinary program of study designed to extend traditional ESL coursework. It provides Non-Native English Speakers with oral and written communication skills including interpersonal communication, small group interaction, team-building, problem solving, public speaking and presentation skills, conflict resolution, assertiveness, and leadership. Students develop skills to enhance their professional, social, and personal interactions, and become more competitive and effective in the workforce.

What You'll Learn
- Compose expository essays in English.
- Demonstrate skill in research, note-taking, organization, and documentation in the preparation and writing of a research paper.
- Demonstrate skill in using verbal and nonverbal symbols, interactive listening, resolving interpersonal conflict, and developing and maintaining personal and professional relationships.
- Analyze American speech production problems due to accents produced by another language; correct misarticulated American speech sounds; demonstrate critical listening to sound production and American English speech patterns; use American idioms and expressions; and prepare and deliver group and individual speech presentations.
- Demonstrate oral fluency in spontaneous speaking contexts and presentational speaking skills in English.
- Complete a service-learning field experience within a private or public agency, educational institution, or citizen volunteer group.
- Read and analyze varied and challenging reading materials, and analyze, synthesize, and evaluate these materials through written discourse.
