Deaf Studies
The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Deaf Studies is designed to provide students with intermediate sign language skills and an overview of cultures and communities within the Deaf, the Hard of Hearing, and the Deafblind populations. This program will not prepare students as interpreters; it will enhance their ability to provide services to these populations.
Details
High school diploma, or GED, or equivalent.
Students must earn a grade of B or better in CRE101, ENG101 or ENG107, IPP205, IPP207, ASL202, ASL203, ASL204, and ASL212, and must earn a grade of C or better in all remaining courses within the program.
Students must complete one-hundred (100) clock hours of community involvement defined by the Program Director.
- Demonstrate effective communication in both English and American Sign Language.
- Differentiate between American Sign Language and English discourse.
- Compare the diverse populations among the deaf community.
- Describe the varied communication systems and language use that exist within the deaf community.
- Identify services, technology, and educational programs available to the deaf community.
- Discuss the rich cultural and historical aspects of the deaf community.
- Recognize the various components of the Interpreting profession.
- Apply ethical decision-making skills in a variety of professional settings.
- Explain federal and state laws affecting the deaf and interpreting communities.
Successful completion of this certificate may lead to employment in a variety of different occupations and industries. The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:
- Students should meet with an academic advisor to develop an individual education plan that meets their academic and career goals. Use the Degree Progress Report Tool in your Student Center to manage your plan.
- The course sequence is laid out by suggested term and may be affected when students enter the program at different times of the year.
- Initial course placement is determined by current district placement measures and/or completion of 100-200 level course and/or program requirements.
- Degree and transfer seeking students may be required to successfully complete a MCCCD First Year Experience Course (FYE) within the first two semesters at a MCCCD College. Courses include FYE101 and FYE103. Course offerings will vary by college. See an academic, program, or faculty advisor for details.
