Arizona runs on people, and Maricopa Community Colleges is in the people business. Across the state, small businesses not only provide essential goods and services but also strengthen local communities and drive economic growth. These small businesses and the entrepreneurs that bring them to life are the backbone of Arizona’s booming economy, creating new jobs.
With business remaining as one of the most sought-after fields of study, it's no surprise that 75% of Gen Z aspire to launch their own businesses, and 93% are already taking steps to make those dreams a reality. Offering certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees in Business, Entrepreneurial, and Management, the 10-college system is preparing the next generation of entrepreneurs to fuel Arizona’s future.
A Proud Arizonan with an Entrepreneurial Vision
Mike Spangenberg, CEO and Co-Founder of State Forty Eight, has a strong connection to Arizona. As a kid, he was often the only one in his classroom raising his hand when teachers asked, “Who’s from Arizona?” To him, Arizona has always been the state of opportunity, a place where dreams can take root and grow.
Working in the hospitality industry during the day and attending Scottsdale Community College at night, Spangenberg learned the value of hard work.
“My experience as a college student led me down the path of really, truly going after what I really want,” he said. “I wanted to be able to control my destiny, and that was starting my own business.”
That drive led him to entrepreneurship, where he learned firsthand the determination it takes to build something meaningful. In 2013, Spangenberg co-founded State Forty Eight with a vision to create a brand that represents Arizona in a positive, fashionable, and authentic way.
Strengthening Small Businesses Through the State Forty Eight Foundation
State Forty Eight’s impact goes beyond T-shirts and hats. In 2020, Spangenberg and his team established the State Forty Eight Foundation, a nonprofit that supports Arizona’s small businesses through mentorship and collaboration. Today, the foundation has funded 54 Arizona small businesses with more than $187,000 in grants and hosted free events that have drawn over 4,400 participants.
“In today’s world, we just have to be kinder to each other, we have to really love on people, and that’s going to make the world and business a better place,” Spangenberg added.
