Selecting the Right Classes
When choosing which classes to take at your Maricopa Community College each semester, it’s important to select ones that meet the requirements of your degree or certificate program. This page will walk you through the class selection process.
First, verify your current academic plan in the My Maricopa Student Portal to ensure it matches your academic and career goals. If you need to update your plan, you can do so through the Update My Plan tool.

- Log in to your Student Center.
- Click the Academic Progress tile and choose Degree Progress from the menu.
- Review the classes you have completed and see which classes you still need to meet the requirements and complete your program.

Don’t forget to check your Advising Notes in your Student Center. Advising Notes is a tool where you and your academic advisor can use to communicate with each other. Your advisor can record notes about your advising appointments and send you attachments, and you can respond!
To access your Advising Notes, complete the following steps:
- Log in to your Student Center.
- Click on the Academic Progress tile.
- My Advising Notes will automatically appear on the screen if there are any associated with your account.
- Click on the View Note icon.
- Students can reply to the note by clicking the blue Update Note button in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
If you have questions about Advising Notes, talk to your academic advisor about this new feature. Don’t have an academic advisor? Contact your Academic Advising office to schedule an appointment.
The Pathway Planner is an academic progress tool located in your Student Center that houses a pre-populated semester-by-semester course sequence (also known as a pathway map) based upon your declared academic program. You may access this tool in your Student Center by clicking on the Academic Progress tile.
If you have attended Maricopa Community Colleges in previous semesters, your Maricopa Student Progress screen will include all of your previous course history, located under the Academic Records tile. This information can be helpful to see what classes you may have already completed toward your program plan. Additionally, if you have courses transferred in, you may view those in your Transfer Credit Report to see if they have been posted.
You may have already completed earlier steps of the enrollment process up through the academic advisement step, but this worksheet is still a good way to keep track of your progress and other important information like which classes you have registered for.
Use the Placement Coach tool to find course recommendations for English, Math, and Reading based on your High School GPA, ACT, SAT, or HSE/ GED test scores. If you have a placement task on your To Do list (located in your Student Center), then you are required to satisfy course placement prior to registering for classes. If you do not have a placement To Do list item, then you can register for classes without using this tool.
Does your current academic plan no longer match your education and career goals? If you would like to update your plan choice, use this tool to make the change.
